DUCTWORK

Commercial ductwork contractor for tenant improvements

Ductwork is the largest thing above most commercial ceilings, and it decides whether every room gets the air it needs. We fabricate and install supply, return and exhaust duct coordinated with every other trade in the ceiling.

AIR DISTRIBUTION

Ductwork that fits the ceiling and delivers the air

Good ductwork is invisible. Every room is comfortable, the system is quiet and nobody thinks about it. Poor ductwork shows up as hot and cold rooms, noisy diffusers and a ceiling that has to be lowered because the duct was not coordinated.

On a tenant improvement the ductwork has to work with what is already there — main trunks that may be reused, structural members that cannot be moved and a ceiling height the architect is not willing to give up. That makes coordination with sprinklers, lighting and plumbing the most important part of the job.

We lay out duct to the reflected ceiling plan, confirm clearances with the other trades before fabrication, and install it with the sealing, insulation and support the code and specification require.

What we coordinate before fabrication

SCOPE OF WORK

What we fabricate and install

Six parts of a commercial ductwork scope.

Supply and return

Rectangular, round and spiral duct from the equipment to every diffuser and return grille, sized to the airflow each room needs.

VAV and zone boxes

Variable air volume and zone boxes installed and connected so each zone can be controlled on its own.

Exhaust systems

Restroom, janitor, copy room and specialty exhaust ducted to the outside with the right fans and backdraft protection.

Grease duct

Welded grease duct for kitchen hoods, installed with the clearances and access the code requires.

Fire and smoke dampers

Dampers at rated walls and floors, installed and accessible for the inspection and testing they require.

Sealing and insulation

Duct sealed to the leakage standard specified and insulated where the energy code requires it.

HOW THE JOB RUNS

How ductwork goes in

The steps that keep duct from being the reason the ceiling is late.
01

Coordinate the ceiling

Duct routing is worked out with the other trades on the drawings before anything is fabricated.
02

Fabricate

Duct is fabricated to the coordinated layout, which reduces field cutting and speeds installation.
03

Install and seal

Duct is hung, sealed and insulated, with dampers installed at rated walls and inspected before the ceiling closes.
04

Connect and balance

Diffusers and grilles are connected and the system is balanced so each room gets its design airflow.
COMMON QUESTIONS

Ductwork questions

If your question is not here, call and ask for an estimator.

Often, if they are sized for the new airflow and in good condition. Reusing mains saves cost and ceiling disruption. We inspect them before pricing.

Because duct is the largest item above the ceiling. If it is not coordinated with sprinklers, lighting and plumbing, something has to be moved in the field, which costs time and sometimes ceiling height.

They close automatically to stop fire or smoke passing through a duct where it crosses a rated wall or floor. The code requires them at those locations, and they must be accessible for inspection.

Yes. Grease duct is welded, installed with required clearances and access, and inspected before it is enclosed.

Usually because of high air velocity or a poorly placed damper. Correct sizing and balancing avoid it.
